Q & A: Why do you talk about first periodsss?

I was asked a question recently: why is your class called Getting Ready for Periods? Isn’t there just one first period to get ready for?

Great question! I wanted to share my answer in this post.

Based on my experience working with more than 75 moms and from my own experience as a mom of a 13 year old, there are three reasons why I’ve come to talk about getting ready for periodS rather than getting ready for A first period. The first two reasons are about tweens and the third is about moms.

  1. Once we experience something first hand we have a whole new relationship with it. This holds true for girls once they start menstruating. Talking with you, reading books, taking a class, chatting with friends, practicing with products are all helpful to get ready. But once they start menstruating, tweens have many more questions and need your continued support.

  2. For some girls, first periods can feel unsettling, uncomfortable, or embarrassing. Framing their journey as first periodS gives them a little room to get used to this new experience, feel their feelings, and trust you’ll be there for their 10th period too.

  3. You might not be with your daughter for her first period. She might be at school, away at camp or with another parent that week. Knowing that your special TLC is needed for first periodS, helps moms let go of the pressure to make one just one moment extra special.

Creating a plan to mark your daughter’s first period is important and being ready to coach and care for her during those first days is so valuable.

Also, tweens need dedicated support, love, teaching and coaching for their first few years of cycling.

While there is only one first period, there are many opportunities with their first periodS to give tweens a healthy, positive start to their cycling years.

That’s why in my Getting Ready for PeriodS class you’ll learn how to care for your daughter through her early cycles and coach her to take care of herself at home, at school, playing sports, and out in the world.
