Welcome to the Raising Flora Podcast!

— Season One —

It’s back-to-school season for my family and as a mom, I know this season can be a lot to manage logistically and emotionally. So I reached out to experts for good ideas and support. We’ve had amazing conversations about important topics like mental health, nutrition, mindset, friendship, academics, and love. And I’ve brought a cycle aware spin to each chat. I invite you to listen in and use our incredible free resources available with each episode.

New episodes released each week now through the end of September.

Episode 05

Giving Tweens and Teens a Solid Start to the School Year

In this episode, I talk with Jessyka Coulter, lifelong learner and founder of Ace Cookie Tutoring, who joins me to talk about:

  • what’s behind your daughter’s “school is boring” comments

  • how tutors work their magic to get students to do things their parents have been saying all along, and

  • why learning how to learn is key in middle school

Jessyka’s joy for learning shines through this episode from her story about wanting to be high school valedictorian to her specific tips for starting the new school year on a great path for learning. And she reminds us that anyone can learn anything, it’s just a matter of knowing how YOU learn. I hope you enjoy!

Episode 04

Supporting Your Athlete’s Mental Game with Bre Smedley of The Elite Competitor

In this episode, I talk about supporting our tween’s and teen’s mental game with Bre Smedley, a life-long athlete who played volleyball in college and now coaches a two-time state champion high school volleyball team in addition to running her business, The Elite Competitor. Bre is using her personal experiences as an athlete plus her Master’s in Education, and her Certification in Positive Performance Mindset to help girls build their confidence for game day and every day.

As a mom of an athlete who loves her sport, I gobbled up Bre's insights and suggestions and I'm excited to share our conversation with you. We talk about:

  • why confidence and mental strength matters as much as physical training for middle and high school athletes

  • what it looks like when your athlete has a solid mental game – hint, it’s not seeing her happy all the time

  • what to say to your daughter before and after competition

  • and what your athlete can do to show up as a positive force on her team

Episode 02

Loving Your Daughter Through Every Stage and Phase with Charise Freeman of Growing in Love Together

In this episode I talk about motherhood, love languages and loving our daughter through every stage and phase with Charise Freeman of Growing in Love Together. Charise is a mom, an author, a speaker and a retired Air Force veteran who helps moms connect with their daughters through the five love languages.

Like everyone's, Charise's motherhood story is complex and special and I'm so thankful she shared it with us. You'll hear Charise talk openly about sexual assault, self-harm, and other challenges as well as the learning and joy she experienced as a first time mom almost two decades ago. During this conversation, we could see each other to nod, touch our hearts, shake our heads and feel our way through, but you'll hear less of me to start because I wanted to hold the space for her rather than guide with questions or commentary. I hope this resonates with you. And I hope you'll take Charise's story and suggestions as a true Act of Service, which you'll find out is one of her primary love languages.

We are both thrilled to share with you the brand-new guide we created together. We combined our expertise in menstrual cycles and love languages to give you ideas for how to use your daughter's love languages to support her unique and changing needs throughout her cycle.

Nourishing Tweens and Teens with Brandee Hommerding of Bee Wellness Collective

In this episode I talk about nourishing our tweens and teens through puberty with Brandee Hommerding of Bee Collective Wellness. I so enjoyed our conversation because it's both deep and practical. We talked about:

  • how to talk with your kids about macronutrients and why breakfast really is their most important meal of the day;

  • how our bodies change during puberty and menopause and ways to nourish ourselves and our daughters through these big life changes;

  • and I asked Brandee the million dollar question on all our minds... What does a healthy relationship with our body look like? And how do we help give that to our daughters? I hope you'll take her answer as a gentle reminder that self compassion is everything.
